We’re your hosts, the Crary Family. We and our professional crew will take you, our guests, to the pristine Middle Fork of the Flathead River, a remote National Wild and Scenic River, for a rewarding and memorable fair chase hunt.

Having worked with stock most of our lives, we take great pride in our fine and dependable string of saddle horses and mules that will safely carry you and your gear. We own all of our stock, so we know them well. Regardless of your riding experience, safety and knowledge of working with trail animals is stressed throughout the trip.

In the morning, we’ll be up early working out hunting strategies over breakfast. Then you and your guide will head out either on foot or horseback for the day’s hunt. There’s good hunting in all directions from the camp, and contact with other hunters is rare. This secluded backcountry consists of river bottoms, grassy slopes, high burns, and rocky peaks. In addition to resident elk and mule deer we hunt, this area is native to Mountain Goats, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear and a host of other species.

After years of backcountry experience, we also know the needs of our guests well, including husband and wife hunting teams. When you ride into our camp on Switchback Creek, you will find comfortable wall tents with wood stoves, lanterns, and cots with foam pads. there is a shower tent, a feature you’ll appreciate after a day of hunting. Once you’ve made yourself at home, stroll over to the cook tent, the hub of the camp. Your newly-acquired mountain appetite will have you going for seconds, maybe even thirds, of the hot and delicious food prepared by our full-time cook. When satisfied, sit back and relax with the crew and share in the camaraderie one can only experience in a wilderness elk camp.

Crary Outfitting is based on the Rocky Mountain Front west of Choteau, Montana. We will gladly shuttle you to-and-from Great Falls International Airport, which is served by the major airlines. We provide lodging for our guests, the night before departing on your wilderness elk hunt.
